HEALTHY WALKS IN FERRING - CAN YOU HELP SET UP THIS INITIATIVE?
.
Do you think you could help to start a "Healthy Walks in Ferring" initiative?
This is a great place for the most beautiful, fascinating and varied walks. Charlotte is looking
for volunteers to help start this scheme. Please read below and respond directly to her if this is for you.

Hi Jennifer,

My name is Charlotte & I am the Community Development Coordinator for Inspire Leisure. Part of my role is to coordinate the ‘Healthy walks in Arun’ programme. This is an initiative from Natural England to try and encourage people to walk more, get fit and enjoy the natural environment. Walks are run from Monday to Friday throughout the whole year from different areas in the district.  I have attached a leaflet for your reference. Currently we have over 500 registered walkers with our scheme, which has been running for 10 years. Our walks are run by extremely dedicated, trained volunteers.

As you can see from our flyer, currently we do not run any walks in Ferring. I have lived in Ferring all my life (I am now 23) and when I started coordinating this walking programme 6 months ago I made it my mission to set up a ‘health walk’ in Ferring as it is such a lovely place to walk! J

To set up a walk in Ferring I need to try and find a minimum of 2 volunteers to run the walk. I have also attached a document encompassing what being a walk volunteer involves. Although I will be advertising throughout Arun and with our current walkers, ideally I would like to find some volunteers from Ferring, as it would be great for the walk to be run by people from the area. I was wondering if you would mind popping something on your website about our scheme and what I am looking to do. If anybody is interested they can then contact me for an application form.

Let me know if this is something that may interest you? There is a Description of the Opportunity below, plus you can download the Leaflet here.

Many thanks,
Charlotte

Description of the opportunity

Healthy Walks in Arun is a scheme that has been running for 10 years. It is a national initiative from Natural England. We run daily walks throughout the week (excluding Saturdays and Sundays) from various locations in Arun. The walks are free and are open to anybody; however the majority of our walkers are 60+. Each walk lasts between 45-60mins. Our walks are run by extremely dedicated walk volunteer leaders. Due to the success of our walking programme we would like to set up two new walks within Arun and consequently we are looking for volunteers to run these walks.

The opportunity would be as follows:

The volunteer(s) would be required to attend Volunteer Walk Leader training, which is a day course. The course will teach you how to:

• Lead a safe and enjoyable walking session for people of all ages and abilities.
• Promote the health benefits of walking; identify potential risks and hazards that may occur on your walk.
• Help tailor health walking to meet individual needs.

The next course is running at Littlehampton Swimming & Sports Centre on September 7th 2011. Please note that coming along to the volunteer walk leader training day does not obligate you to become a walk leader.

You would then be qualified to lead walks for our programme. As a volunteer walk leader you and another volunteer would be in charge of leading a specific walk once a week or once a month, in the morning. You would be responsible for completing the necessary paper work on the day of the walk, this would involve registering the walkers as they arrive, asking new walkers to complete outdoor health questionnaires and filling in accident report forms should any occur. You would also be responsible for managing the walk correctly, encouraging/motivating walkers & providing a friendly face every week.

This is a fantastic voluntary opportunity for anybody who enjoys walking, enjoys socialising and would like to help improve the community’s health and wellbeing.
