Ilex Avenue runs for nearly a mile from St. Mary's Church in Goring, due west to Ferring. A proud avenue of trees, a glossy, evergreen sash to hold back the housing, it is loved by walkers and their dogs; it is a shady stroll away from traffic.  It is the best known avenue of Holm or Evergreen Oaks (Quercus ilex) in Britain and was planted by David Lyon in 1834.

Chairmanship has pased from Michael Tanner, who was appointed a Tree Warden by the Ferring Parish Council in April 1991, to Richard Waller (Tel: 01903 243623, Fax: 01903 248782, email: [email protected], Website: www.waller.co.uk
